Properties:
Reddish brown powder. It is soluble in water to a red solution. For hydrochloric acid, it is a blue-red solution. It will produce reddish-brown precipitate in sodium hydroxide and will be green solution in sulfuric acid. When it is diluted, it will turn to blue then prple, and finally turn to red. The maximum absorption wavelength is 530 nm. Irritating.
Usage:
Redox indicator. Biological staining. Acid-base indicator. The nitrite is analyzed by spotting.
